In this post, we will share with you some tips on how to hang pictures on the wall.

5 tips for hanging pictures on the wall

Hanging pictures on the wall is quite an art, and it doesn’t only require tools. You should know that it is not only a matter of fixing a nail in the wall with a hammer, but that it is necessary to follow certain steps to obtain optimal results. So, to help you fill your home with artwork, we’re going to give you some specialist tips to help you do the best job when faced with an empty wall.

By following these steps to hang pictures on the wall in a practical and effective way, you will see how you can easily display in your home the pieces of art that most represent you.

1- Having the necessary tools: the first thing to do when hanging a painting on the wall is to make sure you have the right tools. These are: tape measure, pencil, hammer, dowels or hangers, dowels, pliers, a spirit level and a drill. All of these tools must be of quality, especially the drill, so that you can be sure that the wall drilling will be done properly. Once you have all these elements in place, you can move on to the next steps.

2- Choosing the size: choosing the right size of the frame is very important. To do this, it is key to be clear about what you are looking for. For example, you may want to place a painting in a small space, so you may want to choose a small size painting so that it does not add to the feeling of cramped space. Or, on the contrary, you may want to decorate a large room, with high walls, and then it is advisable to choose a large painting, since a small painting would be disproportionate. Consider that the measurements of the painting will influence the final result, because the way the painting is mounted on the wall depends on its size.

3- Establish the place: once you already have the painting and the necessary tools to hang it on the wall, you need to choose the exact place where you are going to place it. The environment of which the work of art is going to be a part influences the appreciation of the work of art. On the one hand, it is important to give continuity to the palettes of the environment, and choose a painting that has similar colors to the walls, and to the colors of the furniture and decorative objects. In addition to choosing the room in the house where we are going to place the piece, we need to choose especially the decorative focal point, which is the most suitable point on the wall to place it. Some of the most common decorative focal points are: above the couch, at the head of the bed, and above the desk in the study. The location of the painting should help it to stand out. This means that the painting should not get lost in some hidden corner or wall, nor should it impose itself too much in the chosen space.

4- Define the height: We have already chosen the painting and the place where it will be hung. Now, at what height should we put it? As a general rule, the painting should be placed at the viewer’s eye level, unless there is obstructing furniture. The height of the view would average about 1.70 meters above ground level. The horizontal axis of the chart should be located there. We must take into account that if the painting is hung higher, the lighting will not be adequate, and therefore, it will not be displayed correctly. If, on the other hand, we hang it lower than eye level, we run the risk of it being too close to the furniture, and not only unattractive to the eye, but also uncomfortable. Therefore, it should be placed approximately 20 to 30 cm above the furniture. Thus, both elements have air and can be combined to perfection. Something important to keep in mind is also the possibility of not hanging the picture on the wall, but to place it on a shelf instead. You can even decorate the shelf with other decorative objects that match the painting. If you proceed with this option, it is important that the frame is well secured so that there are no incidents. This method has the advantage that you can move the painting whenever you want, as it rests on a shelf, the wall surface remains clean without any perforation.

5- Think about the composition: a trend that is becoming more and more in vogue is to combine paintings of different sizes. They do not necessarily have to be the same style or color palette. The choice of paintings depends on the touch you want to give to the space. What you should keep in mind if you want to combine paintings is that the smaller they are, the less distance you should leave between them. And, if not, the larger they are, the greater the distance you should leave between them. In general, the minimum measurement is considered to be approximately 7 cm between frames. The composition of paintings is usually placed in corners of the house.

If you feel like it, you can also place them in a more colorful and open place, such as the entrance hall, the headboard of your bed, or on the wall of your study. This trend of picture composition gives the option of having a small art gallery at home. And it allows you to select the pictures you like the most, regardless of whether they match in theme or size. You’re going to see how much more alive your home will become with artwork on your walls.
